Korowai Exhibition

Kaumatua and Kuia from Kororareka in their Korowai

Kaumatua and Kuia from Kororareka in their Korowai

Don’t pass through Kororareka Russell without seeing our wonderful  exhibition of Maori Korowai (cloaks), and the methods of making them.

In September, we will be displaying a beautiful selection of  Maori taonga, treasures of traditional and contemporary Korowai belonging to our tangata whenua.

The Korowai is a finely woven Maori cloak worn as a mantle of prestige and honour. The cloak becomes empowered by the status and mana of its owner and the mana increases when it is worn. And as you’ll discover at the Weaving and Korowai Exhibition and Workshop, they are very beautiful, highly prized treasures.

The exhibition will open on 3rd September at 5 pm with a traditional Powhiri (welcoming ceremony). All are welcome.
