Today sees the first day of Matariki and to celebrate this, a new art exhibition is opening at Haratu to display works by the Kaimahi.

In addition, a number of works, including two Matariki masks guest Artist Trish Clifford will on display together with a giant kete to celebrate Matariki. It will be “must see”!

The story behind the kete belongs to the Kororareka weaving group that meet regularly at Haratu on Thursdays. A couple of months ago, one of their member Catrina Suter a textile artist by profession approached the group with the idea of weaving an enourmous kete and complete it in time for matariki.

For the past 4 months the group has been working hard to complete the project which is now on display.

This year’s Festival of Kororareka on Saturday 13th March, is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever before. Now in its fourth year, the festival was established by the Kororareka Marae Society to mark the Battle of Kororeka in 1845 and be a celebration of local M?ori culture. With the opening of Haratu, the Kororareka Marae premises on the Russell waterfront, there will be more than ever in terms of things for visitors to see and do.

There will be events for all the family, including the Hone Heke Run from Russell Township to the Flagstaff on Maiki Hill and back, finishing on the Russell Waterfront. There will be Kapa Haka performances throughout the day, bands playing, traditional m?ori kai as well as the Best Dressed Dog competition and Miss Kororareka Beauty Pageant.

“I’m really excited about this year’s Festival” commented Festival Organiser Kaye Gorrie “particularly as we know that a lot of overseas visitors really enjoy the relaxed but truly authentic atmosphere of our M?ori culture. They don’t often get a chance to see our local groups perform Kapa Haka so it is great showcase for us and a treat for them.”

Stalls are available for craft and food sellers as well as community groups and application forms are available from http://marae.kororarekanz.com or by phoning Haratu on 09 403 7212. Entry forms for the Hone Heke Run are also available.
